Both Shibboleth and the proxy server enable you to connect to library databases from off-campus, but Shibboleth is simpler to use and more stable because it:

  • Provides single sign-on. Once you log-in you are authenticated to all Shibboleth-enabled systems for 4 hours without having to log-in again
  • Is device neutral. You can authenticate on any device with a web browser regardless of the OS
  • Does not require any set up or configuration changes in your browser
  • Provides a direct, secure connection that is less susceptible to technical difficulties
